Our pick of the cruises, River Diva, boards at Akadémia 3 in District V: book the cruise first, then the room.

The Experience

The Cruise to Book From District V

River Diva boards at Akadémia 3, a few minutes on foot from most District V hotels.

Highlights

  • About 2.5 hours on the water, long enough for an unhurried dinner
  • Boarding at Akadémia 3, a short walk from the Chain Bridge
  • Passes Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle
  • Turns at the Citadella on Gellért Hill and Liberty Bridge
  • Buffet stations planned by executive chef Viktor Moldován
  • Dinner in the Grand Salon of the contemporary River Diva

What's Included

  • Evening Danube cruise of about 2.5 hours aboard the River Diva
  • Seasonal buffet dinner with starters, mains, sides, vegetarian dishes and desserts
  • Unlimited cocktails, spirits, Prosecco, wine, beer, soft drinks and water, served at your table
  • Live music during the cruise
  • Access to the panoramic rooftop deck, weather permitting
  • Host or greeter speaking English and Hungarian

How the Evening Fits Together

Four steps from choosing a date to stepping off at the pier.

  1. Book the cruise first

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure makes the cruise the easy part to change, so fix the date, then the room.

  2. Sleep near the piers

District V puts every central pier within a short walk. Víziváros across the Chain Bridge is quieter and still walkable.

  3. Walk or take tram 2

Tram 2 runs along the Pest embankment with stops a few minutes from each pier. Read your voucher for the exact dock.

  4. Back after the cruise

The boat returns to the same pier late in the evening. From District V you walk back; from Buda, it is one bridge.

The Three Areas Compared

All three work for a dinner cruise. The difference is the walk home and the price.

Where to stay

The Three Areas, and the Hotels in Each

Stay in Belváros-Lipótváros, District V on the Pest bank. Every central dinner-cruise pier is in the district: the Akadémia pontoons by the Chain Bridge, Dock 7 at Vigadó tér and Silverline’s Dock 11 by Elisabeth Bridge. No cruise includes hotel pickup and the boats come back late in the evening, so a hotel a few minutes’ walk away makes the night easy. Across the Chain Bridge, Víziváros on the Buda bank is quieter, with views of the Parliament, and still a short walk from the piers. For better value, Újlipótváros by Margaret Bridge is a tram 2 ride up the river.

Belváros-Lipótváros (District V, Pest)

This is the district the boats leave from, and the one to choose if you want to walk home after dinner on the river. The trade-off is price, and some late-night noise on the streets around Váci utca and Deák tér.

  • Budapest Marriott Hotel, on the embankment by Vigadó tér: every room faces the Danube, and there is a rooftop bar on the ninth floor.
  • Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, the 1906 Art Nouveau palace facing the Chain Bridge, on the square above the Akadémia pontoons; some rooms have balconies over the river.
  • Hotel Central Basilica, a mid-range hotel in a 19th-century building on a pedestrian street by St Stephen’s Basilica.
  • Leo Boutique Rooms, adults-only private rooms with air conditioning, a lift and luggage storage, for a lower budget.

Víziváros (District I, Buda)

Víziváros is the strip between the Buda riverbank and Castle Hill. It is quieter at night than District V and looks straight across at the Parliament. The piers are on the Pest side, about 8 to 15 minutes on foot over the Chain Bridge, so choose a hotel down by the river and not up on Castle Hill, where the walk back after 11pm is a climb.

Újlipótváros (District XIII, Pest)

North of the centre near Margaret Bridge, Újlipótváros is residential and better value. The gourmet dinner cruise boards near Margaret Bridge, and for the central piers tram 2 runs down the embankment from Jászai Mari tér, the end of the line. Walking to Vigadó tér takes about 20 minutes.

  • NH Budapest City, a ten-minute walk from the Danube and Margaret Island, with a sauna and its own garage.
  • City Hotel Ring, on the Grand Boulevard near Nyugati station, with air-conditioned rooms and a 24-hour front desk.

Getting back after a dinner cruise

The boat always returns to the pier it left from. Tram 2, the line that runs along the Pest embankment, stops at Széchenyi István tér by the Akadémia pontoons, at Vigadó tér and at Március 15. tér by Elisabeth Bridge, a few minutes from each pier. The M1 metro starts at Vörösmarty tér, a short walk from Vigadó tér. From Víziváros, the walk back over the Chain Bridge is the nicest part of the evening.

Booking tips

Book the cruise first. Every dinner cruise on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so it is the easy part to move; fix the date, then book the room around it. If a room with a river view matters to you, filter for it on the hotel listing, because not every room in a riverside hotel faces the water. For the cruise itself, our guide to which Budapest dinner cruise is right for you compares them all, and the folk show guide covers the cruises with live Hungarian music. The River Diva cruise, our pick, boards at Akadémia 3 in District V.

Joëlle Canada

"Absolutely amazing, the whole experience exceeded expectations!! the boat itself was absolutely beautiful, staff were so welcoming and friendly. Food was amazing from the soup and the buffet, Great selections and everything tasted beautiful. The choice of drinks on offer was great, and could go up to the deck as much or as little as you liked. The views were absolutely stunning. Would 100% recommend, worth every penny! Great value for money."

Natalie United Kingdom

"Great evening, would highly recommend . Food was really tasty (albeit not as hot as my husband would have liked). Lots of choice and well presented. The boat itself was wonderful and entertainment was pleasant. Stunning views."

Karen United Kingdom

"A truly special experience. The staff, the boat, the food, and the ambience itself are all highly commendable. I definitely recommend River Diva to anyone who decides to sail on the Danube and experience Budapest in a different way!"

Tomislav Croatia

"A wonderful evening, and we felt we'd picked the best cruise there is. The meeting point is easy to find, but there are separate queues for the 7 pm prosecco boat and the 7:30 pm dinner cruise. Several guests joined the wrong one. A dedicated staff member guiding people would help. It's free seating, but every seat has a good view, so no need to rush. Excellent service. With constant refills, the open bar never felt rationed. Our waiter Michael was exceptional and spoke flawless English. Spotless, elegant boat with cozy lighting and really good food. The live violinist was lovely, but the tempo never picked up, so it got a bit monotonous after two hours. The route could be longer: the boat goes back and forth, and by the end you've seen it all. Minor points aside, highly recommended! A must try - we’ll definitely come back"

Jacob Philip Denmark

"This was an amazing experience to do when visiting Budapest! Great selection of food, the cruise is smooth and the photo ops are insane! We loved every minute!"
