Wear what you would wear to a good restaurant in the city: smart casual is what most guests choose, and no operator we checked publishes a strict dress code. Add a warm layer for the open deck, comfortable shoes for the gangway, and your voucher on your phone. Then arrive 15 to 30 minutes early, because the boats leave on time.
Budapest: Prosecco Dinner Cruise with Live Music
The dress code, such as it is
There is no jacket-and-tie rule on any Budapest dinner cruise we could find. One large operator says outright that there is no strict dress code and most guests come in smart casual; River Diva’s house rules only turn away “incomplete clothing” or clothes that would offend other guests. Silverline asks for smart casual on its Christmas Eve sailing. In practice that means trousers or a skirt and a shirt, a dress, or smart jeans with a decent top. You will see a few people dressed up for an anniversary and a few in the jeans they toured in all day.
Layers for the deck
The dining rooms are enclosed, and you eat indoors, but the best moments are often outside. River Diva has a rooftop deck, most other boats have some open deck space, and people step out to photograph the Parliament as it comes level. Once the sun is down the air over the river feels cooler than the streets, even in summer, and from November to March it is properly cold. A light jacket in summer and a real coat in winter make the difference between a quick photo and staying out for the view. Silverline’s Christmas listing asks guests to dress warmly for exactly this reason.
Shoes and getting aboard
You board over a gangway from a floating pontoon, which moves slightly with the river, and decks can be slippery in rain. Flat or low-heeled shoes are the sensible choice. If you use a wheelchair, contact the operator before booking: boarding is over a gangway, often with steps, and none of the operators we read states step-free access.
What to bring
- Your voucher, on your phone or printed. It names the exact pier, which differs by operator.
- ID. River Diva asks for a passport or ID card (a copy is accepted), and alcohol is served only to over-18s.
- A card or some forints for drinks bought on board. Hungary’s currency is the forint, and places that take euros use their own exchange rate.
- A warm layer for the deck, and an umbrella if rain is forecast; cruises normally sail in rain.
When to arrive
Operators ask for different margins, so read the voucher. River Diva asks for 20 to 30 minutes before departure at Akadémia 3 and cannot guarantee late boarding. The Rajkó cruise from Akadémia 2 asks for at least 15 minutes and leaves at the booked time. Silverline asks for 30 minutes, and a late guest can be rebooked onto another sailing, if there is space, for an extra 50 percent of the price. Tram 2 along the Pest embankment stops a few minutes from each pier.
On board
Tables are allocated by the size of your group, so book everyone together. A window seat is not promised unless you buy one, as on Silverline’s window-table option. On most cruises a welcome drink is included and the rest goes on a bar tab; only the River Diva cruise includes an open bar. Menus with set courses are chosen when you book, so decide before you pay. Smoking is banned in enclosed public spaces in Hungary, and on River Diva it is allowed only in a designated outdoor area.
Expect live music on almost every dinner cruise and a folk band with dancers on some. It is sociable, and on the folk show boats the dancers sometimes pull guests into a dance.
Tipping
Gratuities are not included on the cruises that mention them. Budapest restaurants often add a service charge of 10 to 15 percent; if your bill shows one, you need not tip on top. Without one, about 10 percent is usual. Our price guide covers what else can end up on the bill.
With children
Families are a regular sight, especially on the folk show cruises, where the music and dancers keep children busy. Legenda has a children’s dinner package for ages 3 to 12, and on the Dock 6 folk cruise under-3s who are not eating need no ticket, but tell the operator so a seat can be set. For younger children a one-hour night sightseeing cruise can be the easier evening.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code on Budapest dinner cruises?
No strict one. Smart casual is what most guests wear, and Silverline asks for it on Christmas Eve. River Diva’s house rules only exclude incomplete or offensive clothing. Dress as you would for a good restaurant in the city.
Can I wear jeans on a Budapest dinner cruise?
Yes. Smart jeans with a decent top or shirt fit in on every cruise we cover. Shorts and beachwear are best left for the daytime, and a layer for the deck is useful after sunset.
Is it cold on a Danube dinner cruise?
Not indoors: you eat in an enclosed dining room. On deck it feels cooler than the streets once the sun has set, even in summer, and from November to March it is cold. Bring a jacket or coat if you want to stay outside for the view.
How early should I arrive for a dinner cruise in Budapest?
Between 15 and 30 minutes before departure, depending on the operator, so check your voucher. River Diva and Silverline ask for 20 to 30 minutes, and boats leave on time.
Do I need to bring my passport?
River Diva asks for a passport or ID card, and a copy is accepted. Carry some ID on any cruise if you want to drink alcohol, as it is served only to over-18s.
